Lorie McCorkle and me getting ready to party!

On Saturday,May 3rd, the women’s council at Trinity Baptist threw a Garden Party. The theme was Derby because it was on the same day as the Kentucky Derby, so we all showed up in our Derby best. My mom was one of the council women who had been at the church the night before cooking and decorating and she told me I was in for a real treat. And, boy, they did not disappoint me! The Chapel Room was adorned with all sorts of plants, flowers, and glittering lights. Our tables were decorated with spring colored place settings, and with the weather being outstandingly crisp, clear and spring-like, we were all very relaxed and able to enjoy one other’s company.

Seed for thought

The Devotion was centered on God being the master gardener. Pam Stoots read through the first chapter of Genesis about the first days of creation when God went around and created His garden. Pam really brought the six days of creation alive in her reading of the Scripture. She joked about the words “garden” and “party” having no relation to each other since gardening is a whole lot of work. But when the seventh day rolled around, we got the whole glorious picture of our God working through His garden, and then resting to say how good it was. We saw how we sow seeds everyday in our lives through our work, and with our children. Our gardens go through various stages and sometimes we can neglect areas which end up being major projects to fix. We water, weed, and prune, and then water some more. It is a never-ending process where we learn to see the joy in our labor of love.In_The_Garden

After the lunch (a delicious blend of sandwiches, fruits and desserts) and devotion, we were treated to a flower arranging presentation and the event ended with flower Bingo! I could not have asked for a better way to start my hectic weekend. It was such a relaxing time of bonding with women I will soon sadly be parting with at the end of this month. I thank God for the council who, after working long hours at their day jobs, still finds the time to come together to organize these wonderful gatherings.

To top my amazing day off, I got home just in time to see California Chrome win the Derby. If you know the story of this horse, it was a joyous day to see the little underdog outshine all the Kentucky bred pedigrees. What’s amazing is that his story went perfectly with our Sunday school lesson. We taught about David and Goliath. David was also the runt of the litter: an underdog who no one thought twice about. And yet today when we speak of David, we often mention his name in the same breath as our Lord Jesus! Aren’t you glad that God loves the underdogs?

Wishing you a wonderful, blessed, and productive week.
